GERMAN MAUSER GEWEHR 98 HALF MOON SERIAL NUMBER
The serial number is 9848 with what looks like a side-ways "o". The receiver has the number 2456 with an "a." The non-matching (to the rifle) bolt however presents a problem. The ring has the year 1920 above the crown. The walnut stock has the pass-through and the upper hand-guard is present. The lower band is correct and properly attached. Like the second rifle, this has the correct front sight and forward band with stacking rod. The last offering is another enigma: German Mauser Erfurt 1913 Kar 98 Rifle in 8mm. The matching bolt is the correct half-moon type. It does not have the finger grooves but it does have the correct upper hand-guard. The lower band has the side-sling slot and the walnut stock has a pass-through. This rifle has the correct front sight and upper band with stacking rod. The second rifle is described as follows: German Mauser Amberg 1910 Kar 98 Rifle in 8mm. It has a non-matching turned down bolt which is the correct half-moon type. The stock does not have a finger groove and the upper guard surrounds the rear sight and goes all the way to the lower band.
The walnut stock has both pass-through and a bottom swivel. The lower band (which is mounted backwards), is a combo bottom sling / side sling configuration. It has the correct front sight but the upper band is from a Gewehr 98 so there is no stacking rod. The first rifle has this description: German Mauser Erfurt 1918 Kar 98 8mm Rifle with Bayonet. I took a look at the picture reference and all three of these prospects appear to be "Frankenmausers. This week I came across a January auction which has what I hoped to be a number of interesting prospects, but I have serious questions about all of them. Since adding a nice 1940 Oberndorf 98k to my small but ever-growing "collection" I continue my search for the ever-elusive Kar.98b.
